1: Get Started with Online Application Assistance

2: By mail

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the DDS in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local DDS.

3: Via a DDS office

If your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at your local DDS office. Varying DDS offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the DDS closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your DDS allows you to make a personal appointment.


Unexpected occurrences may make it is necessary to obtain a replacement Georiga drivers license. Immediately notifying the DDS about a lost or stolen license should expedite the replacement process. Before the DDS will complete a motorist’s replacement request, acceptable proof of identification must be presented at a local Customer Service Center. 

Drivers have the option of replacing their license in person or online.

In Person

In many cases, to obtain a Georgia drivers license replacement, original documents must be presented when you visit the customer service center. Generate and print your time-saving forms, checklists of required documentation prior to visiting the DDS in person.

The proof of identification categories are divided into two categories, options A and B.  Here are some examples of the most common pieces of documentation for what the DDS considers acceptable proof of identification to replace a lost or stolen Georgia drivers license:

Option A – Only one item is required from this list for proof

Option B – Two items are required from this list for proof

  • Social Security Card
  • Certified copy of marriage certificate (same sex marriage certificate are not recognized)
  • A current auto registration receipt
  • Voter’s registration card
  • Current policies for home, auto or life
  • Motorist’s most recent tax return

Non-U.S. residents are required to have any one of the following proofs of identification:

  • A current and valid passport with I-94 (card or stamp) or an  I-551 stamp
  • Employment Authorization card
  • Resident Alien card
  • Re-entry permit

To replace your license online, you must:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be a Georgia state resident
  • No more than three Georgia drivers license replacement requests can be made in one year
  • No license can have suspensions, cancellations or revocations against it
  • Only regular, non-commercial drivers licenses can be requested online
  • Pay $5 fee

What is an Adult Drivers License?

In some states, the layout of your drivers license may change when you reach a certain age. It is possible for your license to switch from a vertical design to a horizontal card once you turn 21. You may want to seek out a duplicate or replacement adult drivers license when you reach the age of 21.
